From Clay to Craft

Every piece follows the same path

Whether you're taking a class or renting the wheel yourself, this is the rhythm of a session at Kona Clay.

1
Weighing a block of clay on a studio scale

Weigh & Wedge

Every piece starts as a measured block of clay, wedged by hand to work out air bubbles before it ever touches the wheel.

2
Centering a large mound of clay on the wheel

Center & Open

Centering is the hardest part to learn and the most satisfying to feel click into place, Julia guides every hand through it.

3
Shaping a tall vessel on the pottery wheel

Shape & Pull

Walls rise slowly, pulled thinner and taller with each pass, this is where a lump of clay starts looking like something.

4
Finished tall terracotta vessel with rope-tied detail

Finish & Fire

Once trimmed, glazed, and fired in the kiln, your piece is ready to take home, or to keep coming back to build a whole collection.

I can't recommend this enough! The hand-building clay workshop was such a fun, relaxing experience where Julia guided every step. And my daughter loved camp. The atmosphere is so thoughtfully put together and Julia can supply everything needed for beginners or for those who have experience.

I was gifted a pottery class at Kona Clay by my daughter for Mother's Day, and it was such a special experience. Julia was incredibly patient as she guided us beginners through making our own to-go mugs. This is a mug I'll treasure and memories I'll cherish even more!

Julia came to show a group of school children the basics of the pottery wheel. She gave a great demonstration, answered all the children's questions and each student got to experience manipulating the clay on the wheel.

Julia created an amazing experience for my boyfriend and I, allowing him to freely express his advanced understanding of pottery while she taught me the very basics. Her studio was filled with a beautiful array of vases, pots, and other ceramics.
